A Touch of the Tropics

When you think of palm trees, does your minds drift to the golden beaches of the Mediterranean or the sun-soaked landscapes of the tropics. Well, believe it or not, you can grow palms in Ireland – yes, even in chilly inlands and northern gardens! With careful selection and a little understanding of their needs, you can create your very own exotic retreat with palms that thrive in our cool, damp climate.

They add a unique architectural presence to the garden, creating structure and movement with their bold fronds. Their striking silhouettes pair beautifully with ferns, bamboos, and lush underplanting to evoke a subtropical atmosphere – without the need for a plane ticket! While not every palm is suited to Irish weather, there are several species that can withstand our winters, some even thriving in the face of wind and rain.
