Peru is a massive country, so if you want to explore a lot of it, it’s worth dedicating quite a bit of time to truly get the best experience. It is full of unique experiences, with ancient ruins, coast line, mountains and rainforests, you will be wowed by the countries charm.
Machu Picchu is an absolute must if you are visiting Peru, and is arguably one of the most renowned things to see when there. It is an Inca city, surrounded by temples, terraces and water channels, built on a mountain top. It was built in the 15th century with huge blocks of stone joined to each other without any mortar. Today it has been designated cultural heritage of humanity in recognition of its political, religious and administrative importance during the age of the Incas. The gateway to Machu Picchu is in the south-eastern city of Cuzco, but restrictions have now been set in place to ensure all travellers have an official guide to take them there. The most popular trek to Machu Picchu is the classic Inca Trail, which follows the original trails that the Inca’s would have taken from the Sacred Valley. This trail, on average, takes four days with camping along the way, so it is not for the faint of heart, but it is more than worth it to experience this piece of ancient history and the views.
