Cool in the Country

Kevin and Helen enlisted the help of McAleenan Architects & Interior Design to create this showstopping home in the Co. Armagh countryside.

Homeowners Kevin and Helen knew about Stormy Hill from childhood because Kevin’s grandmother, who was born and raised a few hundred yards away, would constantly speak of it. ‘In 2009 the opportunity to buy the land and house arose and we jumped at the chance to buy it,’ explains the couple, who subsequently approached Bernard McAleenan (Director/Chartered Architect) and Sarah McAleenan (Director/Interior Designer) of McAleenan Architects & Interior Design to work with them on the project. As architect Bernard McAleenan tells us, ‘The general design brief was the desire for a mixture of old and new, as Kevin and Helen wanted to retain the traditional rural element – in this instance the stone house, with the addition of a new contemporary style extension with plenty of glass to facilitate a light filled interior and to create a close connection to the external spaces.
