Set on a dramatic outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale, the Rock of Cashel is perched above lush plains and is one of Ireland’s most iconic landmarks and for good reason. Once the seat of the Kings of Munster, it is steeped in history, legend, and breathtaking beauty. Today, several monuments remain: an impressive round tower, a high cross, a Romanesque chapel, a Gothic cathedral, an abbey, the Hall of Vicars Choral and a fifteenth-century Tower House – it is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe. While you can visit the site anytime, the interior of Cormac’s Chapel can only be viewed by guided tour with limited tickets so be sure to purchase ahead of visiting.
