When we think of gardens, the main item that comes to mind is the planting, which sounds very obvious but what exactly is it that draws our attention? Is it the colour of the planting, the range of colours? While this is clearly one of the major reasons we are attracted to our gardens, it is the shape and flow of planting which Deirdre Prince finds more intriguing.Herbaceous borders can be described as the ‘orchestra of the garden’, with each plant type playing its part, performing symphonies for the senses all through the year. Each section of the herbaceous orchestra has a specific style and purpose within a border, with the delicate planting playing the melodic part of the strings, while the brassy sections, inject the symphony with some oomph.
