Conrad McCormick offers advice for those of you looking to plant something that little bit different within your gardens.

As with any form of gardening, being aware of local conditions is important, tree ferns and bananas won’t enjoy growing on a windswept hillside, their delicate foliage quickly becoming battered and damaged, while Mediterranean sun lovers don’t want to be plonked in a shady damp location under trees, where they won’t flower and some may even succumb to rot. In my own garden I have created a backbone of tough and hardy evergreen and deciduous plants around which the stars of the summer can perform. These are then a mix of hardy perennials, lilies with the addition of some temporary tender residents who add drama and colour over the warmer months.
